42 Gaming Millionaires and Lottery Luck in Upper Austria

Casinos Austria
A look back at 2022: 439 lottery main prizes were won; Linz turned out to be a stronghold for players picking six correct numbers; the “Fort Knox” machines yielded no less than ten jackpot winners.

2022’s lucky number is 449. That’s how many participants and guests won top prizes this year, each of which represents no less than a six-digit amount. 42 of the winners were thrilled to even win a prize worth a million euros or more.

The absolute top prize of the year was won by a man from Linz who single-handedly hit the seven-fold jackpot in April and received over 9.8 million euros. This was the second highest prize in Lotto history.

At least one millionaire in each Austrian state

Speaking of Linz and Upper Austria in general, this region just had the lottery year to beat them all: as many as twelve of a total of 42 “six correct picks” winners (almost 29 percent) were won in Upper Austria, even though its share of the country’s population is only about 17 percent. Linz in particular proved to be a stronghold of “six correct picks” winners. With no less than four main prizes (the record win mentioned above as well as the second-highest win of the year), Linz became the most successful municipal district in Austria.

After Upper Austria, Lower Austria came in second place with ten wins, followed by Styria with five, Vienna and Vorarlberg with four each, Tyrol, Salzburg and Carinthia with two each and Burgenland with one.

42 is not only the number of “six correct picks” wins, but also the number of gaming millionaires. Out of 42 million-euro prizes, 36 were won by picking six correct numbers in the Lotto, two by picking 5 plus 1 correct numbers in EuroMillions, three in EuroMillions’ “Shower of Millionaires” campaign and one in the Class Lottery.

Upper Austria is at the top of the millionaire ranking with 13 million-euro prizes as well, followed by Lower Austria with seven and Vienna and Styria with six each. There are three new millionaires in Salzburg and Vorarlberg, two in Carinthia and one each in Tyrol and Burgenland.

The top numbers were in the thirties and forties

The most frequently drawn Lotto numbers in 2022 were 37 and 32, which were drawn 26 times and 23 times respectively over the course of 114 rounds. These two numbers are also among one of the two areas most often seen among the “six correct picks”: each number in the thirties and each number in the forties was drawn an average of 16.5 times. Bringing up the rear were single-digit numbers, with an average draw frequency of a mere 12.8 times. The number 9, which was drawn only eight times, was at the very bottom of the list.

“Fort Knox” jackpot won ten times

The “Fort Knox” jackpot (Austria’s highest-paying slot machine) was won a total of ten times in five of Casinos Austria’s twelve casinos in 2022. Amounts between 202,000 and 283,000 euros were paid out four times in Velden, three times in Bregenz and one time each in Baden, Kleinwalsertal and Linz.

October was the luckiest month

If we analyse the individual months with regard to luck, then October surely was Lady Luck’s favourite, with a total of 41 top-level prizes. (This is even without taking into account the “Austria Super Bonus” round, also in October, in which 50 prizes of 100,000 euros each were drawn in a single go.)
